A blacksmithing demonstration at AG Day 2006. 2007 Honorary Chair

The Arizona Agriculture Day committee has selected John and Bobbie Kerr, of Buckeye, Arizona as the Honorary Chaircouple for the 27th Annual Arizona Agriculture Day to be held on March 8, 2008 at the Historic Sahuaro Ranch Park in Glendale.

This is only the second time in the history of Arizona Agriculture Day that an Honorary Chair position has been filled as a couple. "For generations, farming families succeeded because both husband and wife put in the long hours and hard work that characterize a life in agriculture," said Ag Day Chair PeggyJo Goodfellow, of the Arizona Farm Bureau. "We're happy to recognize the contributions of both John and Bobbie to Arizona's strong agricultural history."

Hundreds of thousands of Arizonans were introduced to agriculture through the Kerrs' long association with the State Fair. They created a Farm Tour in which they emphasized that, "there is no such thing as fast food - just ask farmers!" and helped visitors to understand that virtually everything they eat and wear comes from a farm. The family began showing sheep in Arizona since 1953. Bobbie served on the first Board of the Fair as it transitioned from being a 4-H fair to the Maricopa County Fair in the mid-70's. They created the Sheep Competition at the Arizona National Livestock Show and also designed and built the chutes for the Little Buckaroo Rodeo that are still in use today. John and Bobbie both served as the Fair's Superintendent of Livestock for over 30 years. John oversaw the dairy and pig competition while Bobbie managed sheep and goats

The Kerrs' first dairy was in Tempe, at Kyrene and Elliot in 1950. They then moved to Buckeye in 1974. The John Kerr Dairy was among the earliest members of the United Dairymen of Arizona, the milk marketing cooperative formed in 1960. John served on its Board of Directors for thirty-two years. They helped all three of their sons start their own dairy farms on the Valley's west side, and continued to operate their own Holstein dairy, a 24/7 operation until 2002.

Anyone that knows the Kerrs will tell you that John and Bobbie are the essence of integrity. They exemplify the warm, down-to-earth honesty traditionally associated with farmers and ranchers. The Kerrs have three sons, 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, all of whom are still located here in the Valley.
